Stéphane Couturier's Photographic Shift from Analog to Digital and Back

exhibition · 2026-04-24

French photographer Stéphane Couturier (born 1957, lives in Paris) discusses his evolution from analog photography to digital montage around 2005, driven by the digital revolution. His series 'Melting Point' used scanned film and computer processing to superimpose images, capturing the fluidity and hybridity of contemporary society. He later returned to a documentary approach for his project on Fernand Pouillon's Climat de France housing estate in Algiers, abandoning digital montage as superfluous. Couturier's work now includes video and wall installations, emphasizing a hybrid space between media. His exhibition at Hôtel des Arts in Toulon presents an atlas of Climat de France, combining photographs, videos, and archives. He has also focused on modernist architecture by Le Corbusier in Chandigarh and by Lucio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer in Brasília. Couturier's recent solo exhibitions include Landesgalerie Linz (2011), Fondation Salomon Annecy (2012), BildMuseet Umeå (2013), and group shows at Centre Pompidou Paris (2010), Nevada Museum of Art Reno (2011), MEP Paris (2012), Irish Museum of Modern Art Dublin (2012), MUCEM Marseille (2013), MAXXI Rome (2013), LACMA Los Angeles (2013), and CIVA Brussels (2013).
