Stephan Vanfleteren's Photographs Enter Dialogue with Dutch Masters at Mauritshuis

exhibition · 2026-04-27

From April 23, the Mauritshuis in The Hague will showcase "Pentimenti – Stephan Vanfleteren among the Masters," blending contemporary photography with 17th-century Dutch Golden Age art. Renowned Belgian photographer Stephan Vanfleteren, celebrated for his black-and-white portraits, has produced fifteen new images for this exhibition, bringing the total to sixteen pieces. Instead of displaying the photographs separately, the museum has woven them throughout its galleries, alongside masterpieces by Vermeer and Rembrandt. Invited to explore the collection, Vanfleteren reinterprets its themes for today’s viewers, providing a novel perspective on historical artworks through modern visual narratives.
