Stefano Disegni's comics flip the human-animal perspective

Stefano Disegni, born 1953, published the graphic novel "Al posto loro" with Beccogiallo on October 25, 2024. The book flips perspectives: a deer hunts a human, questioning practices like hunting, bullfighting, and factory farming. It combines satire with factual context—for instance, over 600 bullfights occur annually in Spain, Portugal, France, Mexico, Colombia, and Venezuela, where bulls are drugged and tortured; 82% of Spaniards oppose the tradition, yet it persists for tourism, killing nearly 250,000 bulls yearly. Another example: about 300,000 lambs are slaughtered during Easter, 2 million annually, hung upside down and crowded in trucks. Disegni, a satirical cartoonist for Il Fatto Quotidiano and Corriere della Sera, also worked on TV shows with Gigi Proietti and Maurizio Crozza. The book echoes Aardman's 2000 film "Chicken Run," which used stop-motion to empathize with chickens. The volume includes eight stories and explanatory pages, aiming as an anti-speciesist manifesto without proposing solutions.
