Stefano Cagol's performance with 697 women at Austro-Hungarian cemetery

artist · 2026-05-05

On July 2, 2016, artist Stefano Cagol (born 1969 in Trento) will stage a performance at the Cimitero Monumentale Austroungarico in Bondo, Trentino, involving 697 women to honor the 697 foreign soldiers buried there. The women will ascend the staircase leading to the cemetery, an action meant to give a face to the mothers who lost their sons on the Italian-Austrian front during World War I. The performance is developed in collaboration with local residents, communities, and associations, including the Alpini corps. Documentation from the performance (images and video) will be included in Cagol's solo exhibition opening July 17 at the nearby church of S. Barnaba, which will also feature a hand-molded aluminum sculpture and a sound installation. The project reflects on the tragedy of war, transience, and violence transcending borders and nationalities.
