Stefano Boeri to Lead Roma050 Laboratory for Rome's 2050 Urban Vision
Architect Stefano Boeri has been appointed to coordinate the Laboratorio Roma050, a new urban planning initiative for Rome's transformation by 2050. The laboratory, launched by Rome's Department of Urban Planning via Risorse per Roma, seeks 12 architects to analyze data and develop regeneration strategies over 18 months. Boeri describes his role as an editor rather than a master, coordinating experts including thinkers, politicians, and administrators. The project follows a controversial consultancy contract approved by Mayor Gualtieri in July 2022. Boeri emphasizes Rome's unique character as a 'metropolis-archipelago' with low density, green corridors, and archaeological niches. The laboratory will create an atlas of ongoing projects, study species cohabitation, and produce a conceptual fresco for 2050. It also functions as a training school. Boeri recently received an honorary PhD from the University of Milano-Bicocca, where he discussed the 'genius of environment' in architecture.
