Stefano Boeri's Trudo Tower: Social Housing Vertical Forest in Eindhoven

architecture-design · 2026-04-27

The Trudo Tower in Eindhoven, designed by Stefano Boeri Architetti, is the first Vertical Forest built as social housing. Inaugurated on October 1, 2021, the 70-meter, 19-story tower hosts 135 trees and 10,000 shrubs across its four facades. It contains 125 rent-controlled apartments, each under 50 sqm with a terrace of over 4 sqm featuring one tree and 20 bushes. Residents include 30 socially disadvantaged individuals, asylum seekers, political refugees, and people with disabilities, selected by need and lottery. The tower is located in the Strijp-S district, a former industrial area turned creative and residential hub. Architect Francesca Cesa Bianchi, partner and project director at Stefano Boeri Architetti, stated that prefabrication and optimized facade solutions achieved economic sustainability essential for social housing. A documentary by The Blink Fish, available in a single video and in three episodes on Stefano Boeri Architetti's Instagram, features Boeri, agronomist Laura Gatti, and other professionals discussing the project's unique characteristics and behind-the-scenes details. Boeri emphasized that the tower makes living with trees accessible to low-income tenants, proving it is not a privilege of the rich.
