Stefano Boeri's Casa Futuro Reconstruction Project Advances in Amatrice

architecture-design · 2026-04-27

The Casa Futuro reconstruction initiative, led by Stefano Boeri Architetti, is making significant progress six years post the 2016 earthquake in Amatrice. Situated on the site of the former Don Minozzi complex, this project draws inspiration from Pope Francis's encyclical Laudato sì and the architectural style of Arnaldo Foschini from the 1920s. Supported by the Diocese of Rieti and the Opera Nazionale per il Mezzogiorno d'Italia, it stands as the largest private rebuilding effort in the region. Since the laying of the first stone on October 15, 2021, demolition has been finalized and construction is underway. The design encompasses four distinct areas: civic, religious, youth hospitality, and arts workshops, utilizing anti-seismic techniques and repurposing 60% of debris. Environmental initiatives include rainwater management and the installation of 930 photovoltaic panels. Bishop Domenico Pompili highlighted the importance of community-centered regeneration.
