Stefano Boeri reverses closure of Triennale Design Museum, announces permanent museum

Following an unexpected announcement on August 30 that the 11th edition of the Triennale Design Museum Storie would close four months early, Triennale President Stefano Boeri has reversed the decision after criticism from Alessandro Mendini and 27 other designers. The exhibition will now remain open until its natural end on January 20, 2019. Boeri acknowledged the criticism as transparent and well-founded, clarifying that the premature closure was intended to accelerate the creation of a permanent Italian Design Museum. The permanent museum is now scheduled to open between late January and March 2019, coinciding with the 22nd Triennale International Exhibition "Broken Nature" curated by Paola Antonelli. The initial decision had sparked outrage over its abrupt communication and disregard for existing contracts and sponsorships. Mendini's letter highlighted the lack of fair play and proper procedure. Boeri's response aims to restore trust and transparency.
