Stefano Boeri Completes School Canteen in Amatrice, Named Reconstruction Advisor

architecture-design · 2026-05-05

Stefano Boeri Architetti has completed a school canteen in Amatrice, Italy, as the first step of a temporary food and nutrition hub. The 490-square-meter structure, built in record time, seats 150 and includes a bar area, kitchens, storage, and restrooms. Prefabricated wood elements were used for speed, with insulated metal roofing and large glass openings. The project was funded by a Corriere della Sera – LA7 fundraiser after the August 2016 earthquake, with support from Filiera del Legno Friuli Venezia Giulia, ATI Domusgaia SRL, and Legnolandia SRL. The site will eventually include nine additional restaurants of varying sizes, unified by a steel-and-wood outdoor structure. Reconstruction commissioner Vasco Errani has appointed Stefano Boeri to provide design contributions and urban planning vision for the entire city's reconstruction.
