Stefano Boeri Architetti to Transform Former ATAC Bus Depot into Green Urban Hub in Rome
Stefano Boeri Architetti has unveiled plans for 'Depositi delle Vittorie', the redevelopment of a former ATAC bus depot in Rome's Prati-Delle Vittorie district. The 16,000 sqm site, owned by the Fondazione Memmo family and disused for about two decades, will become a multifunctional hub with commercial, cultural, recreational, and hospitality spaces, plus three levels of underground parking. A key feature is an 8,000 sqm hanging garden suspended 15 meters high, designed as a labyrinthine path for artistic installations, aiming to boost biodiversity and regulate the local microclimate. The project includes two tree-lined piazzas and a public courtyard at ground level. Construction is set to begin at the end of 2027, lasting two years, with inauguration in 2030. The plan shifts from a 2011 urban forecast that allocated 60% residential and 40% commercial/services, now excluding residential use. This follows Boeri's recent projects in Rome, including the enhancement of the Anfiteatro Flavio and the new entrance to the Domus Aurea, as well as his role as president of Triennale Milano. Boeri has previously led the 'Laboratorio ROMA 2050' initiative, describing Rome as a 'metropolis archipelago'.
