Stedelijk Museum Schiedam Exhibition Explores Yves Klein's Artistic Family Legacy
An exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam in the Netherlands presents works by the influential 20th-century artist Yves Klein alongside creations by his family members who were also artists. The show, titled 'Yves Klein and His Artist Family,' features approximately 30 pieces by Yves Klein displayed with over 40 works by his father Fred Klein, his mother Marie Raymond, and his widow Rotraut Klein-Moquay, who continues to create art. The exhibition results from extensive research conducted by the 0-Institute, which focuses on artists associated with the Zero movement, in partnership with the Yves Klein Archives in Paris. Tijs Visser, the institute's founding director, served as guest curator. Visser initiated this investigation after doubts emerged regarding the authorship of a painting signed simply 'Klein,' which was thought to be by Yves. His research uncovered that Fred Klein's artworks were actively collected by Dutch patrons during his lifetime. Works by Fred, Yves, and Marie Raymond are held in the collections of prominent museums in Amsterdam, Utrecht, and Schiedam, as well as institutions like the Dutch National Bank and government art holdings. An extensive archive on Fred Klein is also maintained at the RKD (Netherlands Institute for Art History). According to Visser, this substantial artistic heritage had not been thoroughly examined until now. Lieke Wijnia, a senior curator at Stedelijk Museum Schiedam who co-organized the exhibition, notes that each family member's body of work represents important trends in 20th-century modern art. Fred Klein's art follows the tradition of French Impressionists, while Marie Raymond's aligns with Abstract Expressionism. Yves Klein is described as the most conceptual, concentrating on color's essence and infinite qualities. Rotraut shares his interest in cosmic themes and has developed a spiritual dimension in her practice. The exhibition also highlights Yves Klein's previously underrecognized connections to the Netherlands. Both his parents held Dutch citizenship and frequently exhibited in Schiedam. Fred Klein even had a significant solo presentation at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. Yves visited the country during his formative years, where he encountered artworks by Vincent van Gogh and Johannes Vermeer in Amsterdam, experiences that influenced his artistic development. The exhibition runs until October 25.
