Stedelijk Museum appoints four new supervisory board members after controversy

institutional · 2026-04-20

Following a tumultuous year, the Municipality of Amsterdam has introduced four new members to the supervisory board of the Stedelijk Museum. Beatrix Ruf stepped down as artistic director in October 2017 due to public backlash regarding her art-consultancy roles and alleged conflicts of interest. An investigation released in June 2018 cleared her of these accusations, prompting the resignations of board members Madeleine de Cock Buning, Rita Kersting, and Jos van Rooijen. Truze Lodder, who was appointed as temporary chairman in August 2018, has now been officially confirmed in that position. Van Rooijen rejoined the board in September 2018, alongside newcomers Carla Aalse, Henriëtte Prast, Maarten Doorman, and Homme ten Have. The board's main objective is to recruit a new artistic director, a role unfilled since Ruf's exit, aiming to restore stability to the institution.
