Stanley Tucci's 'Final Portrait' on Alberto Giacometti Hits Italian Theaters

publication · 2026-05-05

Stanley Tucci's film 'Final Portrait' arrives in Italian theaters on February 8, distributed by Bim, after its premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival. The film focuses on 18 days in the life of Alberto Giacometti, exploring his artistic process and personal life. Tucci, an actor and director, is a refined art collector; his father taught art and painted, sparking his curiosity, and his mother instilled a passion for food. He lived in Florence as a teenager due to his father's work. The narrative is based on the book by James Lord, an American writer and art enthusiast who posed for Giacometti over 18 afternoons in Paris, documenting each session with photographs and notes. The film captures the artist's struggle with likeness, a core concept for Giacometti, who was briefly influenced by Surrealism before returning to portraiture after his father's death. Giacometti (1901–1966) studied in Geneva and Rome, learning from Tintoretto and Giotto, and later in Paris under Antoine Bourdelle. He associated with Miró, Ernst, Picasso, Prévert, and Aragon, and contributed to André Breton's Surrealist magazine. During WWII, he moved to Geneva, returning to Paris in 1946 with his brother Diego. He won the Grand Prize for Sculpture at the Venice Biennale in 1962. In 1965, despite illness, he attended his exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He died in 1966 in Chur, leaving behind 'Paris sans fin,' a book of 150 lithographs.
