Stanley Kubrick's Design Obsession Explored at London's Design Museum

The Design Museum in London is hosting 'Stanley Kubrick: The Exhibition,' running until September 15, 2019, featuring over 500 objects including projections and interviews that highlight the director's innovative spirit and fascination with design. The show, first presented in Frankfurt in 2004, includes works by designers Hardy Amies, Saul Bass, Milena Canonero, and Ken Adam, images by Diane Arbus, Allen Jones, and Don McCullin, drawings by Elliot Noyes and Pascall Morgue, and a catalog with texts by Martin Scorsese, Christiane Kubrick, and Jan Harlan. Co-curator Adrienne Groen and archivist Georgina Orgill explain that the exhibition focuses on Kubrick's design methodology, his relationship with London, and his pioneering use of technology, such as Zeiss Planar lenses originally developed for NASA. The show is organized thematically rather than chronologically, exploring censorship, violence, and war across films like 'Lolita,' 'A Clockwork Orange,' 'Spartacus,' 'Paths of Glory,' and 'Full Metal Jacket.' An installation by Moritz Waldemeyer features 100 digital candles inspired by 'Barry Lyndon.' The Stanley Kubrick Archive, established at the University of the Arts London in 2007, houses materials from his entire career, including unfinished projects like 'A.I. Artificial Intelligence' and 'Aryan Papers.'
