Stan Douglas Receives 2016 Hasselblad Award with €110,000 Prize and Exhibition

award · 2026-04-20

Vancouver-based artist Stan Douglas has been named the recipient of the 2016 Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography. The prize includes SEK 1,000,000 (approximately €110,000) and will be accompanied by a solo exhibition opening at the Hasselblad Center in Sweden on 18 October 2016. A new book by Douglas will be released concurrently with the exhibition. Christina Backman, Managing Director of the Hasselblad Foundation, praised Douglas's interdisciplinary approach, noting how it innovatively connects photography, film, and performing arts while addressing urgent social concerns. Douglas's artistic practice, which began in the late 1980s, utilizes film and photography with elaborate productions involving large casts, stage design, and costumes to create speculative histories. His early documentary-style photography has evolved to examine historical themes like emancipation movements and civil unrest. His films often explore the future of civil society. Douglas has exhibited internationally at venues including the Irish Museum of Modern Art (2015), Haus der Kunst in Munich (2014), Carré d'Art-Musée d'Art Contemporain in Nîmes (2013), Minneapolis Institute of Arts in Minnesota (2012), The Power Plant in Toronto (2011), Staatsgalerie Stuttgart and Württembergischer Kunstverein in Stuttgart (2007), and The Studio Museum in Harlem, NY (2005).
