Stan Douglas chosen as Canada's representative for 2021 Venice Biennale

exhibition · 2026-04-20

Stan Douglas will represent Canada at the 2021 Venice Biennale, selected by the National Gallery of Canada. The Vancouver-based artist, active since the late 1980s, has participated in four previous editions of the biennale. A committee including John Zeppetelli, Reid Shier, Kitty Scott, and Sasha Suda praised his ongoing re-imagination of photography and multi-channel film and video installation. Douglas's work examines how technology shapes image creation while addressing historical struggles of minority groups. His video installation Doppelgänger (2019) is currently showing at David Zwirner in New York from January 16 to February 22 and at Victoria Miro in London from January 31 to March 14.
