digital · 2026-04-27

The Städel Museum in Frankfurt has made over 22,000 works from its collection available for free download under the Creative Commons CC BY-SA 4.0 license. This license allows anyone to reproduce, share, use, and modify the images for any purpose, provided the museum is credited. The digital collection includes masterpieces such as Sandro Botticelli's "Portrait of Simonetta Vespucci" (c. 1480), Franz Marc's "Dog Lying in the Snow" (c. 1911), Paula Modersohn-Becker's "Man Lying Under a Flowering Tree" (1903), Rembrandt's "Self-Portrait Leaning on a Stone Sill" (1639), and Jan Vermeer's "The Geographer" (1669). Basic metadata for public domain works, including titles and techniques, as well as detailed information like tags and iconographic sources, are publicly accessible via an OAI (Open Archives Initiative) interface under the CC0 1.0 license, enabling cross-linking with other image databases and research platforms. Museum director Philipp Demandt stated that this initiative represents a significant step toward broader access to cultural heritage and dynamic international knowledge exchange, opening the way for large-scale research into 700 years of art.
