Spring 2018 Must-See Exhibitions in Vienna
Vienna's spring 2018 art season features seven major exhibitions across its top museums. At the Kunsthistorisches Museum, 'The Shape of Time' (through July 8) juxtaposes 19 modern and contemporary works with historical masterpieces, curated by Jasper Sharp and inspired by George Kubler's essay. Pairings include Rothko with Rembrandt, Cézanne's 'Bathers' with a 1st-century torso, and Félix González-Torres' 'Perfect Lovers' with Tullio Lombardo's relief. At Belvedere 21, two shows run concurrently: 'Günter Brus' (through August 12) surveys the Viennese Actionist's career from his 1965 'Vienna Walk' performance to later paintings and satirical graphics, curated by Harald Krejci. 'Rachel Whiteread' (through July 29) presents the Turner Prize winner's signature plaster casts of negative spaces, reprising her recent Tate Britain exhibition; Whiteread is also known for her Holocaust memorial on Judenplatz. Kunst Haus Wien hosts 'Elina Brotherus' (through August 19), a retrospective of the Finnish artist's autobiographical photography and video spanning 20 years, curated by Verena Kaspar-Eisert and Bettina Leidl. Additional shows include 'WOW! The Heidi Horten Collection' at Leopold Museum (through July 29), 'Keith Haring. The Alphabet' at Albertina (through June 24), and 'Man Ray' at Kunstforum Wien (through June 24).
