Spolia's Cabanon Pumar: Glass-Block Glow and Sharp Color in Rural Asturias

In Spain's Asturias region, the architectural firm Spolia has transformed a three-story rural residence into Cabanon Pumar, a 148-square-meter getaway. Situated in Siero, this renovation brightens a previously dark and segmented interior, creating an airy, open-plan living area. A key feature of the design is a curved glass-block structure that facilitates movement and enhances natural light, serving as a lantern-like centerpiece at night. The architects chose to forgo rustic charm, opting instead for modern elements like epoxy resin, rubber flooring, and light walls, accented by vibrant details: yellow doors and handrails, red structural components, green beams, and blue mosaic tiles. Each of the three floors interacts uniquely with the existing framework: the attic features storage and a guest room with red supports and a circular window; the main level integrates a staircase into the living space; and the basement retains rough stone walls, complemented by blue-tiled counters and red supports. Surrounded by apple trees and rolling hills, the house offers views of morning clouds that often settle in the valley, resembling an inland sea.
