Spike Lee Retrospective 'Creative Sources' at Brooklyn Museum
The Brooklyn Museum is organizing a major retrospective dedicated to African American filmmaker Spike Lee, titled 'Creative Sources.' The exhibition will offer a 360-degree view of Lee's career and life through immersive installations, memorabilia, and selections from his private art collection. Curator Kimberli Gant stated that making Lee's collection accessible to the public will celebrate his deep connection to Brooklyn, a place integral to his storytelling. Over 300 objects from Lee's personal collection will be displayed, alongside works by artists such as Kehinde Wiley, Deborah Roberts, and Michael Ray Charles. The retrospective is divided into seven thematic areas highlighting moments from Lee's life and work: Black history and culture, oppression, civil rights struggle, the city of Brooklyn, sports, music, and politics. Lee remarked that humanity must learn to think beyond ourselves and address great inequalities. The exhibition runs from October 6, 2023, to February 4, 2024, at the Brooklyn Museum in New York.
