Speed Painting Challenge at Galerie Magda Danysz

exhibition · 2026-04-23

In February 2010, Galerie Magda Danysz in Paris hosted the first Speed Painting event, conceived during the opening dinner of Vuk Vidor's exhibition. Six artists—Gaël Davrinche, Kosta Kulundzic, P. Nicolas Ledoux, Axel Pahlavi, Stéphane Pencréac'h, and Vuk Vidor—each had 99 minutes to complete a painting on a 120-figure format canvas, separated by black curtains to aid concentration. The event began at 8:10 PM on February 11, 2010. While guests discussed theoretical questions about painting, speed, and virtuosity over pizza, the artists worked. Ledoux inscribed names of painters like Caroll Dunham, Peter Saul, Alain Jacquet, and Pencréac'h. Kulundzic painted a dragon's eye titled "Le Gros Problème de saint Georges," referencing Jurassic Park. Davrinche portrayed Jorge Luis Borges in his signature style. Pahlavi painted a woman's head with a clown nose. Pencréac'h depicted himself from behind carrying laundry. Vidor rendered a male profile with organic elements. All artists had prepared seriously, challenging the notion of improvisation and the definition of an artwork's creation time.
