Speed of Light Exhibition at Holon Digital Art Lab Explores Time Through Video
The exhibition 'Speed of Light' at the Israeli Center for Digital Art in Holon, a suburb of Tel Aviv, ran from November 25, 2008, to January 31, 2009. Curated by Galit Eilat and Eyal Damon, the show featured eight Israeli and international artists whose video works examine the passage of time and everyday life. Notable works include 'Standard Time' by Datenstrudel and Mark Formanek, showing seventy workers manipulating a large digital clock made of wooden beams that change every minute over twenty-four hours, highlighting the absurdity of representing time through Sisyphean labor. Guido van der Werve's 'The Day I Didn't Turn with the World' was also filmed over twenty-four hours at the North Pole, where the artist spins clockwise while the Earth rotates counterclockwise, condensed into nine minutes to emphasize the disjunction between small image and vast space. Ohad Fishof's 'A Slow Walk for Longplayer' depicts a slow crossing of London Bridge, contrasting his pace with hurried passersby and superimposing two temporal scales. The Digital Art Lab is known for its political stance against occupation, and this exhibition, occurring during wartime, is noted as one of its least political shows, raising questions of coincidence or provocation.
