Spectrosynthesis Seoul: Queer Art Across Generations at Art Sonje Center

exhibition · 2026-03-22

The fourth edition of Sunpride Foundation's 'Spectrosynthesis' exhibition series, dedicated to LGBTQ+ art in Asia, opened at Art Sonje Center in Seoul. Curated by Sunjung Kim and Youngwoo Lee, the show unfolds in two parts: 'The Two-Sided Seashell' and 'Tender: Invisibly Visible, Unlocatably Everywhere.' It features over 20 artists including Sin Wai Kin, Young-Jun Tak, Derek Jarman, siren eun young jung, Ayoung Kim, Inhwan Oh, Danh Vō, Tseng Kwong Chi, Kang Seung Lee, Ibanjiha, and Haneyl Choi. Works range from Sin Wai Kin's billboard parody of luxury advertising to Tak's carved pollack sculptures referencing ancestral spirits, Jarman's luminous painting from his Prospect Cottage period, jung's four-channel video documenting queer presence during 2024 martial law protests, Oh's incense piece that burns throughout the exhibition, and Vō's suitcase containing a Flemish Madonna. The exhibition responds to South Korea's recent political turbulence, including the 2024 martial law declaration and subsequent presidential impeachment. Art Sonje Center has a history with queer art dating back to hosting the inaugural Seoul Queer Film Festival in 1998.
