Spectrosynthesis Seoul 2026 Exhibition Showcases LGBTQ+ Art at Art Sonje Center
The exhibition 'Spectrosynthesis Seoul' is being presented at the Art Sonje Center in Seoul from March 20 to June 28, 2026. This marks the fourth iteration of the Sunpride Foundation's series focusing on LGBTQ+ art in Asia, following previous editions in Taipei, Bangkok, and Hong Kong. The Korean chapter explores narratives of marginalization during the nation's swift modernization and examines the queer cultural history of Seoul districts such as Ikseon, Nagwon, and Itaewon. Featuring more than seventy artists from diverse backgrounds and eras, the show includes participants like Ayoung Kim, Kang Seung Lee, Danh Vō, and Ching Ho Cheng. Newly commissioned pieces by siren eun young jung, Mark Bradford, Maria Taniguchi, Dew Kim, and Grim Park are also on display. Notable works include Sin Wai Kin's 'ESSENCE' (2024), a multimedia installation that critiques masculine identity construction through a faux luxury fragrance campaign. Dew Kim presents 'DEEPSPACE PAROUSIA' (2026), a three-part commission featuring a performative structure called 'Inversion Chamber'. siren eun young jung's video 'Sick Seoul' (2026) documents queer involvement in protests following martial law declarations in late 2024. Inhwan Oh's ongoing project 'Where He Meets Him in Seoul' (2001–) involves writing names of gay venues in powdered incense that burns during exhibitions. The exhibition highlights how commercial imagery, bodily experience, performance, and ephemeral materials convey queer histories and identities.
