Special Issue Explores Transnational Art Networks in 1970s Central Eastern Europe

publication · 2026-05-01

A dedicated edition of ARTMargins Online and ARTMargins Print Journal delves into the overlooked connections among neo-avant-garde artists in Eastern Europe during the 1970s. This initiative stems from the Resonances research project initiated in 2022 and includes contributions from Zsuzsa László, Hana Buddeus, Małgorzata Miśniakewicz, Alina Șerban, Cristian Nae, Emese Kürti, and more. László highlights the influence of Hungarian art historian László Beke in curatorial endeavors. Buddeus analyzes works by Petr Štembera and Jiří Kovanda, while Miśniakewicz reviews the 1975 Gdańsk F-Art Festival. Șerban looks into Constantin Flondor's partnerships with East German artists, and Nae discusses 'socialist humanism' in the context of Ion Bițan and Wanda Mihuleac. Kürti emphasizes the Bosch+Bosch group. The project is backed by the International Visegrad Fund and involves multiple institutions.
