SPD proposes freeze on parliamentary salary increases amid austerity

other · 2026-05-06

The SPD and its secretary general Tim Klüssendorf are proposing to suspend the automatic increase of parliamentary salaries, or 'Diäten,' for 2025. The adjustment, tied to real wage growth, would have raised monthly pay by 4.2% from €11,833.47 to €12,330.47 starting July 1. Klüssendorf argues that forgoing the raise is essential to restore credibility and trust given painful austerity measures affecting the public. The Union coalition partner may follow suit. The proposal is reported in the current issue of Der Freitag.
