Spazio7 at Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Wins Michelin Star
Spazio7, the restaurant of the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in Turin, has been awarded a Michelin star in the 2019 edition of the guide. The restaurant was created in 2015 by Emilio Re Rebaudengo, who named it Spazio7—adding the lucky number 7 to the original 'Spazio' from 2002. Chef Alessandro Mecca, who previously worked at his family's restaurant 'Crocetta' in Turin and at Estate di San Martino in Villanova d'Asti, leads the kitchen. Mecca was hired shortly after the restaurant opened and accepted the challenge of earning a star alongside the foundation's six-pointed star symbol. The cuisine is described as rooted in the Piedmontese territory but reinterpreted with a contemporary twist, inspired by the art exhibitions within the museum. Mecca regularly visited shows and spoke with artists, influencing both ingredients and plating. Emilio Re Rebaudengo stated that the star is the highest achievement for a restaurateur, while Mecca sees it as a starting point for new goals. Spazio7 plans to open a second location in Madrid in 2020, as part of a new foundation branch, bringing Italian and Piedmontese cuisine to Spain. The restaurant joins a select group of starred museum restaurants in Italy, including those at Mudec, Castello di Rivoli, and Lucca, while Palazzo delle Esposizioni lost its star.
