Spazio In Situ's Pit Stop: A Car Becomes a Mobile Gallery in Rome

Spazio In Situ, an artist-run space in Rome's Tor Bella Monaca neighborhood, lost its venue in July 2024. The collective—Alessandra Cecchini, Marco De Rosa, Chiara Fantaccione, Andrea Frosolini, Daniele Sciacca, and Guendalina Urbani—continues its mission with Pit Stop, a one-day itinerant exhibition on February 1, 2025. Starting at 2 PM at Via San Biagio Platani 7, the event moves through Pigneto, San Lorenzo, and Ostiense. Four performers drive a car, transforming it into a temporary exhibition space at each stop with lights, ramps, fake glass shards, and soft coverings. Each intervention lasts one hour, involving setup, audience engagement, and artwork retrieval. Artist Cesare Pietroiusti (born Rome, 1955) contributes a recorded audio played via megaphones on the car, inviting passersby to reflect on social and cultural conditions. The collective states the action stems from the need to continue their founding mission of experimental exhibitions, reclaiming space through one-day events in alternative locations like abandoned garages or a vehicle. The stops were chosen logistically and symbolically, starting from In Situ and pausing elsewhere.
