Spazio Griot's 'Riverberi' at La Pelanda: Art, Politics and Change in Rome

exhibition · 2026-04-26

Spazio Griot presents the third season of its project 'Riverberi' at La Pelanda in Rome, running until July 28. The exhibition features the European premiere of Ligia Lewis's 'A Plot, A Scandal' and Mónica de Miranda's 'Path to the Stars', alongside works by Candice Breitz. Co-curated by Eric Otieno Sumba, the project focuses on three interrelated phenomena: whiteness as a power structure (Breitz), the historical emergence of colonialism/racism as enduring oppression (Lewis), and women's action in the struggle for self-determination (de Miranda). Sumba, an independent writer, editor and researcher based at Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW) in Berlin, has collaborated with Johanne Affricot and Celine Angbeletchy at Spazio Griot since 2018. In an interview, Sumba noted that art does not promise change but creates space for engagement, and that the artists' works speak to each other despite their diversity. He praised the curiosity and interest of Rome's artistic communities, describing the city as fertile ground for Spazio Griot's work. Sumba declined to comment on the Venice Biennale curated by Adriano Pedrosa, stating he had not seen it, but emphasized that the question of the 'other' in art history must be constantly revisited.
