Spanish Pavilion at WDC 2026: Reversible Architecture as Living System

architecture-design · 2026-04-01

On April 30, 2026, the Spanish Design Pavilion will debut in Frankfurt Rhein-Main, Germany, as part of the World Design Capital 2026 initiative. Crafted by architects José Ramón Tramoyeres and Javier Cortina, this reversible structure incorporates modular elements made from wood, ceramic, and textile, allowing for easy disassembly, relocation, and reassembly without creating architectural waste. Inspired by Antoni Gaudí's principles of space and structure, it features a lightweight design that creates continuous curves through repetition. The pavilion will enliven the Instituto Cervantes garden, serving as a venue for exhibitions, performances, and community events while promoting environmental sustainability with its use of filtered light, ventilation, and low-energy lighting. This project redefines architecture as a flexible medium for cultural exchange, highlighting the importance of material efficiency and reuse, and showcasing how circular design can innovate temporary cultural spaces.
