Spanish Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai by Amann-Cánovas-Maruri

architecture-design · 2026-05-04

The Spanish Pavilion for Expo 2020 Dubai, designed by Amann-Cánovas-Maruri (Temperaturas Extremas Arquitectos S.L.P.), is a circular structure covering 6,000 sqm with a lowered entrance ramp and a large open plaza shaded by conical elements that function as wind towers. Inspired by Islamic architecture, these cones naturally cool the space: with external temperatures of 30°C, hot air rises inside the cones, maintaining the public area at 20°C. The pavilion emphasizes sustainability through reusable materials and independent climatic cones. Technology plays an educational role via QR codes, offering visitors information on construction, natural ventilation, lighting, responsible gastronomy, and circular economy. The design incorporates Islamic geometric patterns, well-known in Spain, along with vegetation and immersive screens. The project is managed by Acción Cultural Española (AC/E), a public agency collaborating with Spanish ministries and the Spanish Embassy in the UAE. Expo 2020 Dubai runs from October 20, 2020, to April 10, 2021. The architects describe the pavilion as "an open space in the shade, a place of places" where people can rest, read, and enjoy slow living, offering benches, shade, and water as a gesture of welcome and friendship. The building's boundary is defined by where the shadow ends.
