Spanish Congress rehabilitates writer wrongly convicted by Franco for saving Renaissance painting

cultural-heritage · 2026-05-12

Cipriano Salvador (1894-1975), a Republican thinker wrongfully accused by the Franco regime of pilfering a Renaissance artwork he had protected during the Spanish Civil War, has been rehabilitated by the Spanish Congress. The resolution received support from 32 members, while 3 opposed it and 1 abstained, with Vox being the sole dissenting party. Hailing from Pedro Muñoz, Salvador was an educator and Cervantes expert who preserved significant pieces, such as 'La Santa Generación' by Fernando Yáñez de la Almedina. Following Franco's triumph, a priest falsely asserted ownership and sold it to the Prado in 1941, leading to Salvador's wrongful arrest and death sentence, which was later commuted. His case gained attention in 2020, prompting calls for rehabilitation and a memorial plaque in Almedina.
