Spain's Culture Ministry launches 'Cine Vecino' to bring indie films to 200 rural towns

cultural-heritage · 2026-05-18

Spain's Ministry of Culture launched 'Cine Vecino' on Monday, a program to bring independent cinema to rural municipalities with fewer than 10,000 inhabitants and no movie theater within 25 kilometers. Selected towns will have access to a catalog of 200 films over two years, which can be screened for free in cultural centers or neighborhood associations, with a maximum of two screenings per week. The initiative aims to ensure that access to cinema does not depend on one's postal code. Municipalities, groups, and associations can apply for the program.
