Spain Celebrates Miró's 125th Birthday with Exhibitions and Biography

exhibition · 2026-05-04

Spain is marking the 125th anniversary of Joan Miró's birth with a series of major exhibitions and the publication of his first official biography. The Centro Botín in Santander, designed by Renzo Piano, presents 'Joan Miró: Esculturas 1928-1982', the first retrospective solely focused on his sculpture, curated by Maria José Salazar and Joan Punyet Miró. It features experimental pieces from 1928, assemblages from the 1950s-60s, and monumental bronzes from the 1970s-80s, alongside original materials, photos, letters, and sketches. The IVAM in Valencia hosts 'Orden y Desorden', showcasing around 200 works that highlight Miró's subversive, anti-academic side, including his forays into advertising, posters, theater, and performance. The family farm Mas Miró in Mont-roig del Camp opened to the public on April 20, 2018, as the third pole of the Miró Foundation, offering insight into his rural inspiration. Journalist Josep Massot has written 'Joan Miró, el niño que hablaba con los árboles', the first major biography, based on unprecedented access to family archives. The article also includes an interview with grandson Joan Punyet Miró, who manages Successió Miró, discussing the family legacy, Miró's love for Italy, and his relationship with Lucio Fontana. Miró's works are also on view at Palazzo Zabarella in Padua, Italy.
