Spacon transforms former public toilet into Rosenborg Castle welcome pavilion

architecture-design · 2026-05-14

Danish studio Spacon has completed a welcome pavilion for Copenhagen's Rosenborg Castle, converting a former public toilet into an inviting space for ticketing, storytelling, and guided tours. Commissioned by the Danish Agency for Culture and Palaces, the studio renovated the historic pavilion's interior while preserving its existing proportions. The centerpiece is a multifunctional cherry wood table with hidden pull-out display drawers and decorated stools, developed in collaboration with carpentry studio Gilbert Gilbert. The table's octagonal shape references the castle's stair tower and Renaissance gardens. Stools feature carved reliefs of Rosenborg's emblem and silhouette. Shelving and cupboards incorporate facade-inspired details. A traditional color palette frames openings and enhances tactile qualities. The pavilion sits in King's Garden, serving as a visible marker for visitors to engage with objects from the Royal Danish Collection. Spacon founding partner Malene Hvidt emphasized creating a space that feels accessible and human in scale. Photography is by David Stjernholm.
