Space architects envision interplanetary living in new book
In 2017, Annalisa Dominoni and Benedetto Quaquaro, co-founders of a+b studio, initiated the Space4InspirAction course at Politecnico di Milano with the backing of ESA. They created sensory environments for TASI (Thales Alenia Space Italia). Their 2023 publication, 'Le città dell'universo,' released by Il Saggiatore, explores future habitats beyond Earth and the idea of an 'Interplanetary Renaissance,' focusing on sustainability and comfort. The ISS achieves nearly complete waste recycling, while future bases on the Moon and Mars must operate independently. John McFall, ESA's inaugural parastronaut, emphasizes the importance of inclusivity. Galina Balašova, recognized as the first female space architect, is celebrated for her innovative approach to habitability. The studio's Use & Gesture Design method encourages students to integrate aesthetics, science, and technology in space product design.
