SP-Arte Viewing Room Launches with Decolonial Cartography Program

festival-fair · 2026-04-23

The SP-Arte Viewing Room, the online version of one of Latin America's largest art fairs, runs from August 24 to 30. The event features online debates, interviews, and live streams. A key program, 'Cartografia do Olhar,' is presented in partnership with arte!brasileiros and Iguatemi. This project consists of two lessons taught by curator and visual artist Ana Beatriz Almeida, who critiques the Eurocentric perspective in art appreciation. She argues for developing new ethical and aesthetic capacities to appreciate expressive experiences, connecting this to a global racial revolution that seeks to surface suppressed narratives. The first lesson, 'Cartografia do Olhar: Mar e Travesías,' provides a historical review of non-white gazes and experiences, focusing on artists Juliana dos Santos and Rosana Paulino through their works 'Entre o Azul e o que não me Deixo/Deixam Esquecer' and 'Parede da Memória.' The second lesson, 'Cartografia do Olhar: Estadia e Permanência,' examines 'Aceita?' by Moisés Patrício and 'Atos da Transfiguração: Desaparição ou Receita para Fazer um Santo' by Antônio Obá. Ana Beatriz Almeida is co-founder of 01.01 Art Platform, a guest curator for the 2020 Glasgow Biennial, a master's student in Art History and Aesthetics at MAC-USP, and a doctoral candidate at King's College (UK). She brings a decolonial cartography of the gaze to all these environments, seeking new tools for reading and critiquing art through non-white ethics and aesthetics.
