festival-fair · 2026-05-04

São Paulo's contemporary art week opened amid political tension following the arrest of former president Lula. The art-week around SP-Arte/2018, one of Latin America's most important art fairs, runs from April 11 to 15 at the Biennale Pavilion. During the gallery night on April 9, several exhibitions opened simultaneously. Notable shows include: Mira Schendel's 'Sinais/Signals' at MAM São Paulo (until April 22), featuring 90 works from the 1960s-80s; Hilma af Klint's exhibition at Pinacoteca de São Paulo (until July 16), displaying 130 works and manuscripts, some never shown publicly; Paulo Pasta's 'Projeto e Destino' at Instituto Tomie Ohtake (until May 27), presenting about twenty paintings; 'Vivere alla Ponti' at Museu da Casa Brasileira (until April 15), a historical-architectural survey of Gio Ponti; and Vania Toledo's 'Tarja Preta' at Museu da Diversidade Sexual (until May 5), featuring photos from the 1970s-90s documenting the LGBT community.
