Southern Lookout viewing platform opens on Sydney's northern edge
The Southern Lookout, a newly inaugurated viewing platform, is located on Sydney's northern fringe. Crafted by AJC Architects, this 42-meter-long linear structure is perched on a steep incline, extending into the lush wilderness. It marks a significant step in making the former quarry accessible to the public, who can now explore the 60-hectare area due to ongoing landscape-led regeneration efforts. Embracing the quarry's raw and functional characteristics, the Southern Lookout features an industrial design with weathering steel. Its structure is described as 'simple and robust,' with a minimal footprint to safeguard the local ecosystem. The platform boasts an 18-meter span and a 6-meter cantilever reaching into the old quarry. Hornsby Park, the broader area, is being transformed by Hornsby Shire Council into a public space, with AJC Architects collaborating with Clouston Associates on this initiative.
