Southern Guild Opens Tribeca Gallery After Relocating from Los Angeles

exhibition · 2026-03-31

Southern Guild, the Cape Town-founded gallery founded by Trevyn and Julian McGowan in 2008, has opened a new outpost in Tribeca, New York, after closing its Los Angeles location in January. The 32,000-square-foot Cape Town campus provides artists with ceramic kilns, painting studios, and bronze foundries. The Tribeca space, located in a 19th-century heritage building that was formerly a haberdashery, features preserved cast-iron columns and 17-foot ceilings. The gallery's inaugural solo exhibitions feature South African artists Usha Seejarim and Mmangaliso Nzuza. Seejarim's 'Used' presents wall-based and sculptural works made from household items like clothespins and broom handles, exploring expectations placed on women. Nzuza's 'Ballad of the Peacock' showcases Cubist-inspired paintings reflecting his inner world, Black fashion, and his homeland. The gallery's upcoming program includes a May exhibition by Chloë Chiasson featuring oversized three-dimensional paintings, a June group show centered on sports timed to the World Cup final, and a September presentation of large-scale paintings by Roméo Mivekannin reworking compositions by Rembrandt and John Singer Sargent. Gallery director Andréa Delph will relocate to head the New York location. The move places Southern Guild among peers Twenty First, R & Company, and Jack Shainman in Tribeca.
