South London Gallery secures Heritage Lottery Fund grant to convert historic fire station into cultural hub

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-20

A £254,000 development grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund has been awarded to the South London Gallery for converting the former Peckham Road Fire Station into a cultural center. This Grade II-listed building from 1867 was previously donated to the gallery by an anonymous benefactor. Restoration of the derelict structure opposite the gallery will be supported by the funding, along with digitization of the station's archives and community engagement programs involving local residents. An additional £1.5 million from HLF is contingent on raising £2 million from other sources first. The transformed Fire Station is planned to open in 2018. This announcement was made on September 15, 2015.
