South Africa's 2017 Venice Biennale Pavilion Features Candice Breitz and Mohau Modisakeng
Lucy MacGarry co-curates the South African Pavilion at the 2017 Venice Biennale with Musha Neluheni, presenting an exhibition by Candice Breitz and Mohau Modisakeng. The pavilion, located in the Arsenale, opens on 10 May and runs until 26 November. This marks South Africa's fourth participation in the Biennale and its first exclusively moving image and sound-based exhibition. Breitz, based in New York and Berlin, explores subject formation and empathy through video, while Modisakeng examines black identity using ritual and symbolism. The curators aim to critique national representation while showcasing South African contemporary art globally. MacGarry previously co-curated the Johannesburg Pavilion in 2015, when Okwui Enwezor directed the Biennale. She looks forward to the Nigerian Pavilion and the inaugural African Art in Venice Forum. The Biennale, expecting 500,000 visitors, significantly impacts artists' careers and market value.
