Sound Artist Byungjun Kwon Wins Korea Artist Prize 2023
Byungjun Kwon, a sound artist, has been awarded the Korea Artist Prize 2023, an accolade jointly offered by the SBS Foundation and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) Korea. This annual prize, initiated in 2012, follows a showcase of the works from four finalists at MMCA in Seoul, which will be available for viewing until March 31. The jury comprised Aaron Cezar (founding director, Delfina Foundation), Binna Choi (co-curator, Hawaiʻi Triennial 2025), Nav Haq (associate director, Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp), Yuka Uematsu (chief curator, National Museum of Art Osaka), and MMCA director Kim Sunghee. The jury commended Kwon's immersive robot theater for provoking discussions on post-humanism and the convergence of humanity, science, and technology. Kim Sunghee remarked that Kwon's work reflects diverse currents within the relentless progression of contemporary civilization.
