Sound and Music Resonate Across Venice Biennale 2022 Pavilions

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The 59th Venice Biennale, titled 'Il latte dei sogni' and curated by Cecilia Alemani, runs from April 23 to November 27, 2022, featuring numerous sound and music installations. The Swiss Pavilion presents 'The Concert' by Latifa Echakhch, in collaboration with composer Alexandre Babel and curator Francesco Stocchi, as an immersive rhythmic and spatial experience that treats the exhibition like a musical piece, with a beginning and end. Echakhch studied piano and music theory to inform the project, which uses harmony and dissonance to evoke feelings of expectation, fulfillment, and fading. A vinyl record and book accompany the show. San Marino's Pavilion includes artist and musician Roberto Paci Dalò, working with Nicoletta Ceccoli on 'Risvegli' within the larger 'Postumano Metamorfico' project, using drawing and sound to create sensory and synesthetic devices that evoke myth and interspecies dialogue. The Australian Pavilion features Marco Fusinato's 'Desastres', a live noise performance using an electric guitar as a signal generator over 200 days, synchronizing sound and image. A collateral event, 'Angels Listening' by Rachel Lee Hovnanian at the Biblioteca Zenobiana del Temanza, presents seven mute angels representing suppressed truth, with a cathartic performance freeing their voices, reflecting on social alienation and technology's dominance.
