Souls Grown Deep like the Rivers: Black Artists from the American South at Royal Academy
The Royal Academy of Arts in London is currently hosting an exhibition titled 'Souls Grown Deep like the Rivers: Black Artists from the American South.' This display features works from Black artists who were born between 1887 and 1965, during the era of Jim Crow laws (1877-1964). Many of these artists, lacking access to galleries, creatively used recycled materials. Some prominent figures in the exhibit include Thornton Dial, Ronald Lockett, and quilt-makers like Mary Lee Bendolph and Rachel Carey George. Standout works include Dial's 'Testing Chair (Remembering Bessie Harvey)' from 1995 and Lockett's 'Sara Lockett's Roses' from 1997. You can check it out until June 18, 2023, at 6 Burlington Gardens, London.
