Soul Mapping at Zeno X Gallery: Figuration and Ambiguity

Zeno X Gallery in Antwerp presents 'Soul Mapping,' a group exhibition exploring the tension between appearance and reality in figurative painting. The show, one of the gallery's last, spans two spaces in central and south Antwerp. Works by Marlene Dumas, Miriam Cahn, Jack Whitten, Mary Heilmann, Rosalind Nashashibi, Sanya Kantarovsky, Mounira Al Solh, Luc Tuymans, Raoul De Keyser, Salman Toor, and Strauss Bourque-LaFrance are featured. Dumas's 'Portrait of Jack Whitten' (2023) stands out for its emblematic figuration, while Cahn's 'Soldat' (1997) and 'Roh' (1998) dissolve into the background. Whitten's 'Soul Map' (2015) presents an aerial surveillance-like composition. Heilmann's works from 1995 reference Mondrian and Malevich. Nashashibi's 'Punch in Love' (2023) is noted for its spirited ambiguity. Kantarovsky's 'Father' (2023) conveys urgency with Schiele-esque features. Al Solh's caricatured figures revel in spontaneity. At the second space, Tuymans's 'Happy Birthday' (2023) and Toor's 'Loincloth Man' (2023) continue the theme of enigmatic figuration, with Toor's work evoking Velázquez. The exhibition runs until 28 October 2023.
