Sou Fujimoto wraps Dior Shinsaibashi in ribbed facade evoking haute couture drapery

architecture-design · 2026-05-27

Sou Fujimoto has designed the facade for the new House of Dior Shinsaibashi in Osaka, Japan, featuring an undulating, ribbed surface that evokes flowing drapery and layered fabrics. The four-storey store in the central Shinsaibashi area nods to Dior's history and its ties to Japan. The facade, resembling Japanese washi paper, lifts above the entrance and is topped with a star, Dior's symbol. Interiors by Peter Marino include Versailles parquet, a sculptural staircase circling an abstract metal artwork by Alice Aycock, and floral designs by Azuma Makoto referencing ikebana. The ground floor offers women's wear, accessories, fragrances, and jewellery, with seating on Claude Lalanne's Gingko bench. The first floor features ready-to-wear by creative director Jonathan Anderson. The second floor houses menswear with navy blue denim armchairs. The top-floor Monsieur Dior restaurant, designed as a tribute to gardens, has leaf-patterned seating and green carpets. Artworks by Christian Bérard and Tim Hailand, and furniture by Franck Evennou are throughout. The store is the latest Dior opening in East Asia, following the Gold House in Bangkok and a bamboo-inspired boutique in Tokyo's Daikanyama.
