Sou Fujimoto's Meiji Park Opens in Fukuoka, Blending Architecture and Landscape

On August 7, a new urban park named Meiji Park was inaugurated in Fukuoka, Japan, close to Hakata Station. Designed by architect Sou Fujimoto, this 3,572-square-meter space merges architecture and landscape in a vertical manner. It includes a four-story commercial structure with stepped terraces linked to a 226-meter-long elevated walkway, providing visitors with shaded areas and diverse viewpoints from the summer heat of Fukuoka. The building will feature various establishments, such as Land Bageri bakery, Poss Coffee cafe, 400℃ PIZZA Piu Hakata, and Continue craft beer bar. The park boasts five unique plazas, including the rooftop Sora no Niwa (Sky Garden) and the central Nono Niwa (Field Garden). Approximately 1,400 square meters are allocated for greenery, incorporating around 160 native trees and plants to enhance the seasonal landscape. During the opening ceremony, Fujimoto expressed that the design seeks to harmonize architecture with the park, fostering a space for dynamic human interaction. Additionally, public art by local artist KYNE showcases a woman gazing into a cut-out mirror that reflects the park behind her.
