Sotheby's to Auction Howard Hodgkin's Works on Paper

On June 12, 2018, Sotheby's London will auction works on paper from Howard Hodgkin's private collection. The sale, titled 'Howard Hodgkin, Working on Paper,' aims to fund a catalogue raisonné (last updated in 2003) and assist Antony Peattie, Hodgkin's partner, in acquiring graphic works for museum donations. Frances Christie, head of Sotheby's British art department, noted that Hodgkin's works on paper reveal diverse sources and approaches, including stage designs for the Royal Ballet and Mark Morris Dance Group, a poster for the 2012 London Olympics, and book covers for Julian Barnes and Susan Sontag. Meanwhile, Sotheby's is re-entering the Indian market after Christie's withdrawal, with initial auctions planned for December 2018. The move responds to a growing number of Indian collectors and a rising local market, despite Sotheby's previous unsuccessful attempt 25 years ago.
