Sotheby's to Auction 17 Works from Grasset Collection of Dutch and Flemish Still Lifes

market-auction · 2026-04-27

Sotheby's London will auction 17 works from the collection of Juan Manuel Grasset (1927-2020), a Spanish civil engineer and passionate art collector, at its Old Master Evening Sale on December 7. Grasset, a founder of the Friends of the Prado, spent four decades assembling one of the world's largest private collections of 17th-century Dutch and Flemish still lifes. The consignment includes highlights such as Jan Davidsz de Heem's still life (estimate £1,000,000–£1,500,000), Osias Beert the Elder's still life (estimate £400,000–£600,000), Floris van Dyck's Still Life of Luxuries (estimate £600,000–£800,000), and a Canaletto view of the Grand Canal in Venice (estimate £3,000,000–£5,000,000) — the top lot, commissioned by the Duke of Kent in the 1730s and appearing on the market only three times. The collection was previously exhibited in San Diego (2016) and Florida (2019).
